Nogales, Arizona: 2001. Journey
through the Universe programming is easily customizable to
community strategic interests, and offers a framework for community-wide
participation. As an example, the Local Team in Santa Cruz County,
Arizona, wanted to use their Family and Public Programs to attract
participation by research and science education organizations from
across the state.
Pictured is a family science evening held March 2001 in Santa
Cruz County attended by over 1,500 parents and children. Before
the presentation by Visiting Researcher Dr. Jeff Goldstein, the
attendees were able to walk to over 30 stations spread out across
two gymnasiums at a local high school, each station providing hands-on
science activities for families as shown in the photo. The Local
Team had invited research and science education organizations statewide
to come and do the activities with the families. It was a great
way for these organizations to interact with the community, and
to provide an understanding of their missions and the programs they
offer. After the presentation, the local area amateur astronomers
treated attendees to telescopic viewing of the night sky. |
