Below is a proclamation by the Honorable Linda Lingle, Governor of the State of Hawai’i, declaring Journey through the Universe Week across the state January 21-28, 2007.

The Big Island of Hawai’i became a Journey through the Universe site September 2004, and held their first programming in January 2005.  The Governor has declared Journey through the Universe Week each January for the last three years.  In January 2005, a National Team of five Visiting Researchers and one Visiting Educator conducted 105 presentations in classrooms for 5,500 students in this underserved region of the state.  120 teachers were trained on lessons on Solar System content, and 2,500 attended 4 family/pubic programs.  By January 2007, the Local Team on the Big Island was now sustaining the program with exclusively local talent, and had taken on all program operations.  22 local area astronomers, trained by the National Center for Earth and Space Science Education the year before, visited over 8,000 students in 420 classrooms, one classroom at a time.
